Set during World War II and the Holocaust “The Book Thief” is a tragic and emotional story of a young girl living in Nazi Germany. Suffering is normal for Leisel Meminger, a young 10 year old girl who is growing up in a country that is unstable because of war. In the beginning of the story, narrated by “Death”, Leisel, her little brother Werner and her mother travel to the small town Molching, just outside of Munich Germany. In extreme cold, suffering from starvation and no medical attention, Leisel has her first experience with death. Before leaving the cemetery Leisel picks up a book titled the Grave Diggers Handbook. Instead of returning it, she takes it. Leisel arrives to Molching, where she will stay to live with foster parents Hans and Rosa Hubermann. New parents and home, new school, new friendships and the heartbreak of separations and loss can Leisel Meminger be happy? New opportunities with books bring her happiness. Still Lesiels life is consumed with hate towards war and mortality, but with courage and love can she defies death? |
